Label LiteracyWhat A Proprietary Blend Actually Means For Buyers
Glyco Eden's label lists chromium separately, then a "proprietary blend" of 14 more ingredients. If you've wondered what that term actually means, here's an honest explainer.
What a proprietary blend is
A proprietary blend lets a manufacturer list every ingredient in a formula by name, in descending order by weight, without disclosing the individual milligram amount of each one — only the blend's total weight is shown.
Why companies use them
Reasons range from protecting a formula from competitors copying it, to simply not wanting to reveal that a "hero" ingredient is present only in a token amount. Both legitimate and less-honest motivations exist, and from the label alone you usually can't tell which applies.
What it means for you as a buyer: you can verify an ingredient is present, and roughly its relative amount compared to others in the same blend (ingredients are typically listed by descending weight) — but not its exact dose, and not whether it matches amounts used in research. This is true for 14 of Glyco Eden's 15 total ingredients.
How to read a proprietary blend label
- Ingredients near the top of the blend list are present in larger amounts than those near the bottom.
- A long list spread across a small total blend weight means many ingredients are likely present only in small amounts.
- Don't assume an ingredient is at a "clinical" dose just because it's named — ask the seller directly if you want to know more.
